Icaria
island is closely connected with myths from ancient times
The island's name comes from the myth of Icarus, who escaped from
prison thanks to the wings that his father constructed from feathers
and wax. He was so excited by the freedom of flying, that disobeyed
his father instructions approaching very close to the sun, causing
the wings to melt and he felt and drowned next to an island that
has taken his name. The island of Icaria!
Other myths in Greek mythology, refer that the birth place of
Dionysos, the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine,
of ritual madness and ecstasy, was the Island of Icaria. Today
Dionysian Mysteries still take place every year in the island,
by the name "panigyria" or "Ikarian Festivals"
